Prepaid Top-Up: designing flexibility without cognitive overload

Rebtel wanted to become a one-stop shop for the things migrants actually need: international calling, top-up, remittance, and had identified prepaid top-up as the next logical extension. But "add a top-up feature" isn't a design problem on its own; the real question was what that feature needed to flex around.
The problem
Migrants sending prepaid recharge to family back home needed very different things depending on who they were sending to and why: data, local minutes, international minutes, SMS. Rebtel's existing structure treated recharge as one-size-fits-all.
My role
Led the UX design process end to end, collaborating with the in-house product analyst and PM on research synthesis, customer support on user insights, and developers on prototyping and UI.
Key decision
Usability testing on the first design revealed high cognitive load from scanning many bundle options at once. I redesigned around an expandable card system with contextual recommendations, keeping the flexibility users needed without forcing them to compare everything simultaneously.
Impact
15–30% adoption within 6–12 months of launch.
